The 1984–1985 UK Miners' Strike

The wheels of fate make a return, giving the guys an event from 1985 to do an episode about. For this retrospective, Jamie and Milo explore the miners’ strike that ran from March 1984 to 1985 in the UK. The strike is considered one of the most violent industrial disputes in Britain, pitting friend against friend, family against family, and a powerful union against the government. It also resulted in the death of three people, thousands of injuries, and many lost jobs.

Yeah, good points. We didn’t get into the knockdown effects of the other businesses impacted by the loss of an industry. And how it isn’t so easy to find other work if there isn’t any to find. Thank you.

@vladimir_orlok :I came from an area that suffered this way and though I understood the financial decisions made by the Government I also understood that there was an unfeeling attitude present as people were advised to ”get on your bike and find work”. Not easy if you have to cycle 50 miles each way due to record unemployment.

There’s a bit of extra context here that you briefly touched on. Thatcher’s government basically decimated the industries of the north and the miners saw themselves as next on the list. When a central industry dies people lose their jobs. They therefore don’t have money to buy meat (so the butcher goes out of business, for example) and then everyone in the area feels the effects. This means crime goes up, depression goes up and drug use goes up. All while Thatcher was gutting social services.
