The best thing about this is that NZ learned it could not rely on old allies (USA and UK) to do the right thing so went it alone from then on. That’s made us a stronger country. Fun Fact- I used to walk past the dock where the Warrior was sunk every morning. There’s a lovely memorial there.

The reaction of the French was quite something at the time. My sister is French and she saw this as the imprisonment of innocent French citizens after Greenpeace had sunk their own boat (she if course changed her mind when the truth emerged). So I can understand why a Kiwi might pretend to be an Aussie while in Paris. To add insult to injury the repatriated French agents were decorated upon their return to France.
